Coach Mealer's Bio

Coach Newton Mealer enters his 10th season as head basketball coach at Center Hill. Mealer has guided the Mustangs to the MHSAA 5A State Championship which was the first one in school history. He also guided the team to (7) District Championships, (4) elite 8 appearances, (3) State tournaments and (2) Final 4's. Coach Mealer's team holds the single season win total with (31). He's also a 5 time District 1-5A Coach of the year. Following the Mustangs State Championship in 2019 Coach Mealer was named Clarion Ledger, USATODAY, MHSAA and NFHS Mississippi Coach of the Year. Mealer will represent Center Hill as the coach of the North team in the Mississippi North/South All-Star game this year.

Mealer comes to Center Hill after guiding Germantown High School through back to back 20 win seasons and two trips to the regional quarterfinals. Coach Mealer leaves Germantown with more wins in a single season (24) than any other coach this decade. He has had several players sign college scholarships and has coached many great players including the Mississippi player of the year.

Coach Mealer has coached players like Todd Mayo who played at Marquette, Austin Hollins, son of Memphis Grizzlies coach, Lionel Hollins, who played at Minnesota and now professionally overseas, and Ian Clark, ALL American guard at Belmont who won and NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors of the NBA to name a few. He is dedicated to bringing respect and tradition to the Mustang Program. He is also the assistant AD and teaches in the physical education department.
Coach Mealer prepped at Briarcrest High School and still holds two major records at Briarcrest today. He leads the school in scoring and rebounding and was nominated to the McDonald's All-American Team. His most recent honor is his induction into the Briarcrest Hall of Fame. He received a scholarship offer to play basketball at the University of Southern Mississippi. While at Southern Miss, he was a part of two NCAA Tournament teams and was a member of the academic Deans list. He played professionally in the NBA Summer Pro-League. Coach Mealer is married to Jennifer Burton Mealer. They have three children, Jake, Kurt, and Hope.
